Teatime 2024
video projecting onto a corner, tracing paper, video projection: 1 minute and 44 seconds video loop, surround sound
This Toronto-based work aims to capture countless ongoing events through the lens and then flatten them into a unified whole through collage, creating an urban landscape that transcends time and space, representing a cross-cultural experience. It conveys a spatio-temporal concept within the context of globalization. In this experiment, the artist uses a single corner as a medium to create an illusion of infinite space, where any surface connected to the corner—whether ceiling, floor, or wall—can evoke a sense of boundlessness. The randomness of the photographs serves as a metaphor on the contingency of modern times, as the images in the work were taken by different people at different times using various devices. The entire piece seeks to convey a paradoxical atmosphere: the left side represents the quiet, introspective state of a melancholic person drinking tea, while the right side symbolizes the noisy, chaotic external environment surrounding them, encouraging the viewer to reflect on uncertainty and self-existence. Accompanied by surround sound, recorded and enhanced with Foley effects, the work simulates the hustle and bustle of downtown Toronto from morning to night, deepening the viewer's engagement with the spatial depth the projection aims to explore.
