Impression of Dunhuang: Animistic
video and sculpture installation featuring tin lotus landscape, two projectors, slow rotating motor, glasses, mirrors, transparent tapes, video projection: 99 seconds loop
This experimental projection artwork, inspired by the artist's personal visit to the site, uses light-reflective materials to recreate the Deer King Jataka mural from Cave 257 of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu, China. Through its immersive atmosphere, the work allows viewers to experience the unique beauty of the Mogao Caves, even if they haven't been there in person. Simultaneously, it delves into the relationship between humans and nature as depicted in the Buddhist story of the Deer King Jataka, incorporating a natural mimicry of a lotus pond created with industrial materials. By applying the principles of light reflection, the artwork employs a slowly rotating sculpture to project light in all directions, ultimately filling the entire space with a small installation that explores the connection between space and object.
